Bear Lake has a distinct turquoise blue color which has earned it the nickname “Caribbean of the Rockies”.  Because the color of Bear Lake is so unique we often get the question “Why is Bear Lake So Blue?”  While every once in a while we try and convince someone that every few years the lake is drained and the rocks on the bottom are painted to give it the turquoise color, the real reason is because there is lots of very small particles of calcium carbonate (lime) suspended in the water that reflects the water’s blue color to the surface.  There are also lots of different factors that can change the color the lake looks.  On sunny days the blue sky can enhance the blue of the lake, while on cloudy days the lake looks more turquoise in color.  It is really neat when you have clouds blocking part of the lake while the sun is hitting the other part and you get a mixture of different colors all at one time.  How calm the lake is also has a great effect on what color it appears. Smooth water will reflect the sky colors more than rough or choppy water will.

Bear Lake is also known for some very stunning sunrises, and sunsets.  Even though most people are on vacation and like to sleep in, it is definitely worth the effort to get up and enjoy the sunrise on the lake.  There is a magical feeling in the valley when you get thousands of people here all having a great time and making so many life long memories with family and friends. We hope you enjoy your time at Bear Lake, and come back to this page often to see more Pictures of Bear Lake.
